UPDATE: Chief Spence clarifies that she is not requesting a personal audience with the Prime Minister of Canada. She is asking for a commitment that he will initiate a dialogue to discuss treaty relations. She wants it NOW but not later than 2 months,and she wants him there. She wants the Governor-General there. The Premier of Ontario. First Nations Leaders.
I guess this change opens the door for her to stop soon?

I certainly am wondering about Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence, who is on a hunger strike to bring attention to aboriginal issues but REFUSES TO MEET WITH ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS MINISTER DUNCAN, who has contacted her a number of times to stress the urgency of her stopping her hunger strike because he is worried about her health. SHE REFUSES TO SEE HIM/ADDRESS HIS PLEAS.
[Duncan first proposed on Tuesday to arrange a meeting with a working group to discuss improving the relationship between First Nations and the federal government.
Duncan sent a letter late Wednesday to Spence, saying in part:
"It is my understanding that you met today with a Member of Parliament. Given your willingness to accept meetings now I am hoping that you will reconsider my offer, as a Minister of the Crown, to meet or speak with you by phone to discuss the issues you have raised publicly."

On Monday, Conservative SENATOR PATRICK BRAZEAU, who is Algonquin, WAS REBUFFED IN AN ATTEMPT TO MEET WITH HER.
Yet she WILLINGLY has visits and photo shoots with Justin Trudeau, and an aboriginal Actor, who is pictured above. [ Marc Garneau has written a letter to the Prime Minister on her behalf ]
With this information in mind, HOW SERIOUS CAN SHE BE THEN?
- She is demanding our Prime Minister stop the country’s business and rush over to her hunger strike spot. This puts our Prime Minister in a very bad spot as his Aboriginal Minister is already trying to communicate with her.
- She wants to talk about Aboriginal Issues [ treaty rights are in there too ]
- She wants to meet not only with our Prime Minister, but with the Governor-General and with First Nations leaders to discuss the treaty relationship.
- SHE WANTS BUT WILL NOT GIVE.
As far as I know she has not willingly opened up her Band’s books or participated in a meaningful dialogue of communication with federal officials.
In my view, this Chief is using centuries old tactics. Why can’t she embrace the present and be transparent and a communicator.
This is the mystery that endures.

then she should be commited with a sphychiactric evaluation. I’m sorry but when someone spends the amount of money she spent. and dosen’t want a auditor General in there. she has something to hide then. and she should not be trusted with money why is the pm and the conservatives the victims in this they were only doing there job. the atawampiskat wanted self governing. they were the ones who excepted the money. to start there own self governing. maybe she should have thought of all that when she left her own people out in the cold. although the people in the tent looked content with video games and a T.V and channels. personally I think most of it was all a set up to try and make the government look bad

The point I was making, or trying to, was that using her possible death by starvation is stupid. She will not starve. Yes it would be political, but it is still a stupid reason to give in to her blackmail. What if she has a heart attack, or stroke, will that be the PM’s fault. And I still don’t believe she is on a real hunger strike.
Mary T. I can’t believe you don’t think Theresa Spence’s death would be a political issue, especially in the 2015 federal election. Plus, conservatives should not be seen as cold, uncaring people. We are not. As a result, a way should be found to put a stop to the entire fiasco. Certainly not to give in but arresting her for some valid criminal code reason, like intimidation of the PM.
So, she might die. Dozens of motorists will die this coming wk end due to weather, drinking or texting. The PM could be involved in a plane crash. What a stupid reason for giving into her blackmail. She doesn’t look like she is starving and no reports on weight loss. She has a lot of fat to be used up to keep her going. To me she is a phony and is hurting natives by this action. If pro lifers were barricading a cnn line I bet they would be arrested and charged. And those idle no more natives sure appear to be well dressed for the cold weather. Aren’t those drummers breaking some noise bylaw.
It is time the natives quit their dancing and chanting and come out of their tents into the real world.The cave men did it,but the natives want to suck on the Canadian teat for generations to come.YET,their chiefs of whom there are too many and I think most are just made up spend billions of our taxpayers dollars on WHAT?Let us have an immediate investigation about where the money has gone and why these natives are still living in poverty.As far as the blockades and demonstrations,arrest them,stop then immediately and jail them.They will be warmer and better fed in our jails.And for the natives,educate yourselves and quit feeling so sorry for yourself.And for gods sake look into why your chiefs are spending all your money on themselves and not on housing and food for your families.Quit blaming the white man and look in the mirror to see who the enemy is.

am puzzled by the same issue you are. Spence herself has now made her life and death hunger strike political. What she is demanding of the PM and GG is blackmail. Meet with me or I risk dying. If the PM meets with her on her terms, any other Canadian can demand the same privilege.
If Liberals Trudeau and Garneau are so willing to listen, why did the Liberals under Chretien not do more when they had thirteen years to do it? Yes, Paul Martin signed the Kelowna Accord but the Conservatives have already provided at least the same $5 billion in education and other grants.
Same old.Same old.
If Spence dies, it will her choice. Harsh? Perhaps. But, the Minister is the one with the power to make changes. He is the one she should be talking to. In the final analysis, the PM has no more power than his Cabinet Ministers, even less because he does not hold a specific portfolio.
The GG cannot meet with her and has said he cannot because he is limited under the Constitution as to what he can or cannot do as he represents the Queen and she never gets involved in the political realm.
All that said, I hope Spence soon faints and then those around her will have no choice but to send her to a hospital to recover. Because, no one, that I know of, has ever brought about significant political change in this way.
